St. Luke's Idaho Cardiology Associates (SLICA)
Clinical Research Department

Provides experienced investigators, dedicated research staff, high quality facilities and willing patients for placement of clinical trials in cardiovascular medicine.

For nearly a decade, the Clinical Research Department of SLICA has participated in national and international clinical trials specific to the treatment of heart disease. The majority of these trials have been sponsored by pharmaceutical and device manufacturing companies.

SLICA is the largest cardiology practice group in the state of Idaho. The practice includes 14 board certified cardiologists with subspecialty certification in: invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology, and echocardiography, as well as three nurse practitioners. The Clinical Research Department is comprised of a medical director, who is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Cardiology and a team of dedicated research staff members. All physicians and staff are CITI certified, and all clinical coordinators are certified in shipping diagnostic specimens

Our Mission
Our mission is to increase knowledge and advance the quality of cardiovascular health care. We strive to provide our patients, community, providers, and sponsors with high-quality research services that are consistently accurate, timely, realistic, ethical and compassionate.

Our Patients
SLICA provides cardiac diagnostic, interventional and medical management to patients in Southwest and Central Idaho, Eastern Oregon and Northern Nevada. There are four clinic office locations in southwestern Idaho, one in Boise and one each in Meridian, Caldwell and Eagle. In addition, outreach clinics are held in Sun Valley, Hailey, McCall and Weiser, Idaho, as well as Baker City, LaGrande and Ontario, Oregon. The referral area represents a 400-mile radius around Boise with an estimated population of 500,000. The demographic profile of our referral area is predominantly Caucasian with an appropriate representative population of Hispanics, Europeans, Asians, African Americans and Native Americans. SLICA physicians currently serve approximately 50,000 active patients and perform over 1,100 interventional procedures per year.

Our Facilities
The Clinical Research Department is physically located at the Shoreline office close to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. At this location, we have a locked storage area within the department for storing study investigational products, as well as all patient files, regulatory binders and case report forms. Monitor accommodations include access to a private room, desk, fax, copier, phone and Internet.

SLICA physicians are affiliated with Saint Luke's Health System. St. Luke's operates two large hospitals in the Boise Metropolitan area, and two additional hospitals that serve outlying rural areas. St. Luke's also has a local IRB that meets once monthly.

All department personnel have access to e-mail, computer technology, printer and fax capability. All department coordinators are familiar with electronic data entry and have successfully worked with online and lap top computer data entry systems. We are currently using Clinasyst research study management software. Our clinical patient charts are stored in TouchChart, a computerized patient record system by ALLSCRIPTS. We are also affiliated with MD DataCorp for the purpose of data mining technology as it supports research patient selections from within our patient client base.

Recruiting Patients for Studies
Recruitment activities include direct referral from within our practice, chart audits, data queries from MD Datacorp and NetPractice, our practice management system. We also advertise internally to our physicians. We audit clinic schedules and review hospital inpatient admission records for SLICA patients that meet inpatient study enrollment criteria. We also have anticoagulant and lipid specialty clinics.

Our Diagnostic Capabilities
SLICA has a full range of outpatient diagnostic technologies including the following: Saint Luke's Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Lab (at both the Boise and Meridian locations), onsite nuclear medicine, echocardiography, ECG, electrophysiology device programming and interrogation equipment, transtelephonic device monitoring, and onsite laboratory services including a centrifuge, refrigerator, -200C and -70oC freezers. Regular UPS, DHL and FedEx courier services and immediate access to dry ice are available. Our affiliated hospitals offer a full range of inpatient services and overnight observation facilities, including radiology, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, laboratory, and emergency services.
